Peres: Cooperation with Cyprus is not an action against anyone
President of Israel Shimon Peres stressed that the cooperation between Israel and Cyprus should not be considered as an action against anyone, noting that the two countries will do whatever possible to act in the best benefit of their peoples and for peace in the region.
President Peres, who held a meeting Thursday afternoon with President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou, in the framework of his state visit in Cyprus, praised their good bilateral relations, noting that their cooperation will be further enhanced.
According to an official press release, Omirou thanked Israel for its stance as regards Cyprus' sovereign rights to explore for hydrocarbon reserves in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
Stressing the prospects for cooperation between the two countries as regards the energy field, Omirou said that Cyprus acts according to international law, including the Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Referring to the Middle East, Omirou said that Cyprus supports positions of principles, based on the international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Omirou expressed the gratitude of Cyprus towards Israel's stance as regards the Cyprus problem.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, Omirou expressed pessimism as regards efforts to reach a solution of the problem, saying that no substantive progress has been achieved so far, due to the continuous Turkish intransigence.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the achievement of a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem that would safeguard human rights for all people on the island.
Concluding, he urged once more the international community to exert pressure on Turkey to abide by the international law and the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.
