Greece’s conservative New Democracy (ND) party leads in voters’ preferences by a wide margin over PASOK’s Socialists, according to the results of the latest public opinion poll, but still lags from its 33.5% showing in the 2009 election which it lost.
ND, led by Antonis Samaras, gathers 30% of preferences, while George Papandreou’s PASOK, which gained nearly 44% in 2009, is now down to 15.5% -its worst showing in more than 30 years, according to the poll by Public Issue on behalf of Skai TV and newspaper Kathimerini.
Left-wing opposition parties seem to gain the most from PASOK’s demise. The Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) gathers 14%, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) 13.5% and the Democratic Left 9%.
The nationalist Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS), which participates in the current coalition government of Lucas Papademos with two ministers, along with ND and PASOK, appears to lose a large chunk of its previous following, falling to 5%. Ecogreens gather 4% and the Democratic Alliance of former foreign minister Dora Bakoyianni the 3% threshold required for entry into Parliament.
Papademos, a former European Central Bank vice-president, enjoys a positive or rather positive image among 60% of respondents, with 20% having a negative view.
Notably, an unusual 38% those polled favor a coalition government, with only 16% against; 11% said they wanted to see new parties and personalities on the political spectrum.
