Samaras Promises Commitment to New Program
Antonis Samaras, leader of the conservative New Democracy party which currently leads in the opinion polls, promised Greece’s international creditors on Wednesday that his party will remain faithful to the targets of the new economic program in order to help the country exit the crisis, but also noted that “some changes in the implementation of the program are likely to be needed”.
“My party, New Democracy, is committed to the success of the targets of the fiscal stabilization program, of its basic policies and their implementation. The same applies to the Memorandum/Economic and Financial Agreement that was voted through by the Greek Parliament last Sunday…
“I promise we shall support the immediate implementation of cuts of structural nature and the continuous efforts to control the expenses of the Greek State… We obviously express our commitment to a speedy implementation of the financial strategy that includes the participation of the official and private (PSI) sectors, together with our European partners.
“This will help Greece attain the ultimate targets of its fiscal viability and offer the necessary financial means to support our country’s adjustment and its reform efforts,” he said in a letter to Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker.
Separately, Samaras said that elections will take place directly after the completion of the PSI and will open the way for the salvation of the country.
“We must cut the debt and turn the country away from the precipice… We can moderate the recession and begin the recovery. Our stance is salvation with responsibility,” he told a gathering of small business owners.
He accused the previous PASOK government of “not negotiating but signing whatever they given”.
